The Grey is a restaurant housed in a former Greyhound bus terminal in Savanaah. James Beard cited it for it’s accomplishments in transforming peasant food which fed the poor and enslaved population, into culinary level dishes.
The menu is simple; four words: DIRT PASTURE WATER PANTRY
Under each category are descriptions of four dishes. For instance, under PASTURE, there is Rabbit, Sweetbreads, Lamb Heart and one other item. Each item is described in detail. Under WATER, seafood dishes are described. DIRT has things grown in the ground like potatoes. PANTRY is what I chose. Traditional ly, Middlin rice was rice that was broken and not good enough to sell. So it went to the poor folks. When our middlin rice arrived, Barb and I each took a spoonful and glanced at each other, eyes widening. What was this? It’s not like rice. It is ?????? It was delicious. Neither of us could describe the spices or flavors but we loved it. Then moved on to the rest of our dinner.
The waitresses were knowledgeable and gave great descriptions of the food.
But, the waiters!!! I’m convinced the boss scoured movie lots or modeling agencies to find good looking men, THEN trained them to be waiters!! Huge Jackman, Antonio Bandera and a young Leonardo DiCaprio would be jealous of them. Theses young men were faultlessly groomed, with smiles that displayed perfect teeth, and very attentive to the customers. Wow, what a bonus. All up, the experience at The Grey was superb. Now I’m a ‘foodie.’
